OSRAM Australia Pty Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of OSRAM GmbH, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens Ag.

OSRAM is one of the three largest manufacturers of light sources (light bulbs) and electronic control gear in the world and with 88% of all sales generated outside of Germany and a sales presence all over the world, OSRAM is a global player.

OSRAM lamps have been sold in Australia since the 1960's-with Siemens appointed sole importer in 1984. But it wasn't until 1991 that a separate lighting subsidiary trading as WOTAN Lamps was launched, and the rights to the OSRAM brand name (lost after World War I) were re-established in 1994.

Adopting innovative technology and promoting it to the market has been behind OSRAM Australia's rapid rise from relative obscurity to being one of the market leaders. Most of OSRAM Australia's future growth is likely to come from innovative general lighting products, associated electronic control gear and L.E.Ds.

Nationwide we have a staff of 46 dedicated employees, with branches in New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria. OSRAM Australia sells nearly 1500 product lines sourced primarily from Germany and, increasingly from the United States, Foshan China, Indonesia and other OSRAM manufacturing sites. It is active in all sectors of the lighting market - including general lighting, display optics, electronic control gear products and the automotive market. We are represented in all customer channels – Trade and Wholesale, OEM and Retail.

OSRAM Australia is currently expanding its distribution network and investing in new computer technology. Full EAN numbering and bar code scanning is available for improved inventory control.

Environmental concerns are high on the political agenda in Australia. Despite the country's huge reserves of energy (coal, natural gas, oil and renewable energy sources) there will be continued pressure to meet greenhouse gas emission targets.

For OSRAM, protection of the environment is an important aspect in all the phases of a product's life, from selection of the raw materials through the various production processes to recycling. The design of energy saving products containing less or no hazardous materials will remain a top priority.

One focus of our efforts is the continuous reduction of ecologically problematic substances, such as mercury. In the "bad old days" fluorescent tubes contained up to 45mg of mercury in a 4 foot long tube. The new OSRAM Lumilux Plus Eco lamp has revolutionised this critical environmental problem. The LUMILUX PLUS ECO lamp has a mercury content of 4.5 mg (+0.5mg) per 4 foot tube, thus the amount of soluble mercury present at the end of lamp life is negligible.

Our energy-saving technology is providing us with increasing opportunities. For example, as part of a major overhaul of Australian cities in recent years, we have supplied two tunnel construction projects in Sydney and Melbourne with energy-saving fluorescent lamps.

Another area of expertise is stadium lighting and OSRAM Australia won the contract to supply 600 2kw metal halide lamps for the 110,000 seat Stadium Australia, where the track and field events for the 2000 Olympics took place.

OSRAM is a world leader in LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology and associated equipment for general lighting and other applications. LED solutions are available for an ever expanding range of applications.
